Agents of the Civil National Police (PNC) of Guatemala detained a group of alleged hitmen this Wednesday, one of them Cuban, when they were presumably heading to carry out an attack on a family, according to official reports.

During a police intelligence operation in the municipality of Nueva Concepción, in the department of Escuintla, the Cuban Gerardo Casas Ortiz, 48 years old, and the Guatemalans Laudelino Noguera Duarte, 37; César Bernabé Castillo Valenzuela, 53; Ana Esmeralda Martínez Mayorga, 30; and Jhony Alexander Estrada Vásquez, 36, who also holds Mexican nationality, were arrested, authorities informed reporters and local media.

The National Civil Police (PNC) reported in a statement that police officers from the Escuintla precinct, in southern Guatemala, intercepted five individuals traveling in a black Mazda car, carrying two illegal pistols, two magazines, and 26 ammunition rounds, which were confiscated.

The police indicated that the Cuban is in Guatemala illegally.

Likewise, it was revealed that Estrada has been wanted since February 22 by a court in Villa Nueva for the crime of negligent injuries; while Noguera has a record since January 29, after being arrested along with three other men in Cuyotenango, Suchitepéquez, while driving a vehicle without license plates, transporting four rifles, three pistols, and over 180 rounds of ammunition.

Guatemala is one of the Central American countries where Cuban migrants who leave their country in search of opportunities temporarily stay and risk embarking on the difficult journey towards the southern border of the United States in an attempt to seek asylum in that country.

In the last two years, news has emerged of numerous detentions of migrants from Cuba in transit through Guatemalan territory, who are being deported by the authorities for not having legal status in the country.

Several Cubans have lost their lives in tragic road accidents.
