Despite the forecasts of intense cyclonic activity in the Atlantic starting on June 1st, the Cuban government suspended this Friday the Popular Exercise Meteor-2024, which usually prepares the country's population for the hurricane season.

A note from the Civil Defense states that it was decided not to carry out the Meteoro-2024 -which had already been postponed to May 31 and June 1- in order to "focus efforts on the restoration of the National Electrical System," as reported by the officialist portal Cubadebate.

He adds that during the week of May 13th to 17th, the planned activities for risk reduction were carried out and the plans and measures to reduce vulnerabilities in all organizations and territories of the country were updated in preparation for the upcoming hurricane season.

He also ensures that the management and command organs "will continue to specify on the ground the planned measures" in the plans to face large-scale meteorological phenomena such as a hurricane.

However, the exercises involving the population and preparing them for disaster situations will not be conducted, despite the fact that the meteorological services of Cuba and the United States agree that the Atlantic hurricane season extending from June 1 to November 30, 2024 will be the most active in the last 30 years.

The regime, which had planned to carry out the exercise on May 18 and 19, postponed the activities to May 31 and June 1 due to the fuel supply crisis and the proliferation of power outages on the island, a situation that far from being resolved has continued to worsen.

The Civil Defense General Staff of Cuba announced on that occasion that they had postponed the event, which they have now finally canceled, "due to the complex situation of the national electrical system."

The ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel acknowledged at the beginning of the month that the island is facing "a highly complex situation in the energy sector."

Despite the justifications of the leader, the population continues to experience power outages that have exceeded 14 hours in some areas, causing constant stress among citizens and leading to some protests that have been suppressed.
