The Cuban Meteorological Institute reported that a strong hail storm affected the province of Ciego de Ávila on Tuesday, amid a worsening of weather conditions throughout the national territory.
Meteorologist Frank Fernández Castañeda reported in Facebook that the occurrence of a Severe Local Storm was reported in the city of Ciego de Ávila at 18:30 UTC (2:30 pm local time), which was characterized by the fall of hail the size of a pea.
Torrential rains were also reported strong gusty winds, but they did not leave material damage.
The Florence Automatic Weather Station recorded a cumulative 47 mm of rain between 3:00 pm and 5:00 pm, while the First of January Automatic Weather Station recorded a cumulative 56.4 mm of rain between 3:00 p.m. pm and 5:00 pm.
This phenomenon was associated with the atmospheric instability over Cuba, due to the existence of a trough, high humidity content and diurnal warming, explained Fernández Castañeda.
Other territories in the country were also affected by heavy rains. In Baracoa, Guantánamo, all rivers overflowed causing severe flooding.
