On June first, the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season officially began, with concerning forecasts that it will be the most active in the past 30 years.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) of the United States reminded this Saturday that the hurricane season will extend from June 1 to November 30.
While reporting that "the tropics will remain relatively quiet for at least the next 7 days", at the end of May in its annual report prior to the start of the hurricane season, NOAA warned that the most active in the last three decades is expected, with between 17 and 25 storms with winds exceeding 62 kilometers per hour.
Rick Spinrad, administrator of NOAA, highlighted in a press conference that the current forecasts are the highest that the agency has issued in its regular May report, as in a typical season between seven hurricanes and three major hurricanes with maximum sustained winds of 178 km/h or more are recorded.
The high expected activity in the Atlantic basin is attributed to a combination of favorable factors for the formation of storms, including nearly record warm ocean temperatures in the Atlantic and the development of La Niña conditions in the Pacific.
NOAA indicates that the reduction of the trade winds in the Atlantic and lower wind shear will contribute to a season with a higher number of cyclones than the average of 14 named storms.
The Deputy Administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Erik Hooks, warned that storms are already being seen across the country that can bring additional dangers such as tornadoes, floods, and hail.
NOAA also states that in a typical hurricane season in the Atlantic, the first named storm tends to form between mid-June and late June, while the first hurricane tends to form between early August and mid-August. The peak of the hurricane season is September 10, the organization detailed in X.
Facing these forecasts, which have been agreed upon by specialists from nearby Cuba, the authorities of Florida have called on the population to prepare to face the high cyclonic activity that is approaching.
The mayor Daniella Levine Cava met on Friday with county officials and emphasized the importance of being prepared for possible tropical storms, hurricanes, floods, and extreme heat.
Cuba, on the other hand, suspended the Meteoro 2024 exercise, which prepares the population to face disasters, due to a lack of fuel.
