The city of Camagüey, in the central-eastern region of Cuba, was hit this Friday by a severe local storm with hail and strong winds, which caused trees to fall and damage to the electrical grid.

A severe local storm (SLS) characterized by hail and strong winds occurred around 3 pm this Friday in the city of Camagüey, as reported on their social media by the local station La Voz del Bayatabo.

According to this media outlet, the meteor caused "trees to fall," triggered "a dozen transformers to blow," and left "cables on the ground and other damages that have left a considerable number of customers without electric power," as reported by the Camagüey Electric Company.

As we enter the summer and the month of June, TLS are becoming more frequent, so it is recommended that the population protect their lives and property in case of the formation of strong storms in the afternoons," the mentioned media outlet stated on its social media.

On the other hand, the provincial government of the People's Power in Camagüey reported that the storm occurred between 2:50 pm and 4:10 pm on Friday, and there were reports of damage in some People's Councils of the city of Camagüey. The governmental entity did not specify in which ones, nor the extent of the damages.

A worker from the Meteorological Center of Camagüey reported that in the La Guernica neighborhood, there was hail, heavy rain, and strong winds in gusts from the north-northwest direction estimated at 90 km/h. Additionally, the provincial government stated that the electric company reported electrical system damages in the main municipal area due to this severe weather phenomenon.

The specialists from the Forecast Department of the Meteorological Center of Camagüey pointed out that the situation was "influenced by the presence of a trough at mid-levels of the troposphere, combined with the passage of a tropical wave and the instability that occurs in the afternoon due to the intense daytime heating and local factors."

These conditions led to the formation of "cells of convective clouds over the main city of the province of Camagüey, with showers ranging from moderate to strong and thunderstorm activity."

Images shared on the social media of the radio station and the provincial government showed the damage caused by the storm, with branches torn off trees and zinc roofs blown away by the strength of the wind. These events also led to the collapse of the power lines and damage to transformers and other equipment in the local electrical grid.

At the end of March, a shocking hailstorm affected towns in the provinces of La Habana and Artemisa, mainly in Boyeros, Bahía Honda, and Guanajay. Videos shared on social media allowed us to see that the winds became strong in some regions.
