A Cuban citizen was detained in Galicia, Spain, for driving without the corresponding license. The individual explained that when he was detained, he did not have the original document, as it had been confiscated earlier by the Local Police.
Willing to prove his innocence, the Cuban presented himself before the courts of Ourense, rejecting a plea deal that involved admitting the crime.
The Region reported that the man was intercepted on December 1, 2023, by the Civil Guard on the A-52, driving a vehicle without having obtained the necessary official permission.
The accused stated in Criminal Court 1 that he had a Cuban driver's license. However, the document is only valid for driving in Spain during the first six months of stay in the Iberian country.
The Cuban stated that he had arrived in Spain between July and August of that year, so he would be within the allowed timeframe. He explained that he could not show the permit to the agents at the time of detention because it had been taken days earlier to verify its authenticity.
The Civil Guard agents, upon arresting him, consulted the Local Police about the status of the accused's permit. Initially, they were told that they did not have the document, but days later they confirmed its seizure.
Taking into account this confusion and the authenticity of the Cuban driver's license, the defense lawyer requested an acquittal for his client.
In Spain, driving without a valid license is one of the most serious offenses, and it is punishable by fines of up to €6,000 and prison sentences of up to 6 months of deprivation of liberty.
The protagonist of this story escaped by the skin of his teeth, as the Cubans say.
