The Provincial Transport Company of Havana announced the suspension of the passenger maritime transportation service in the Bay of Havana due to garbage accumulation, following heavy rains in the region.
On its Facebook page, the state institution detailed that the measure is due to the impossibility of sailing in the Havana Bay due to the large solid waste dragged by the sea current near the Emboques. This waste could cause damage to the vessels.
Cuban authorities have stated that the population can contact the telephone number of the Emboque de Regla ferry terminal (7 797 7493) if they want to inquire about the resumption of the service. They announced that they could potentially reactivate the service on June 7, provided that weather conditions allow it.
This suspension coincided with the announcement by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MINREX) of Cuba about the upcoming arrival in Havana of several ships from the Russian Navy on an "official visit".
Between June 12 and 17, 2024, a Russian naval detachment composed of the frigate 'Gorshkov', the nuclear-powered submarine 'Kazan', the oil tanker 'Pashin', and the salvage tug 'Nikolai Chiker' will arrive at the port of Havana.
The regime stated that the visit strictly adheres to international regulations and that none of the ships carry nuclear weapons, so their presence does not pose a threat to the region.
During the stay of the Russian naval detachment, 21 gun salutes will be fired from one of the ships as a greeting to the Cuban nation, reciprocated by an artillery battery of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) from the San Carlos de La Cabaña Fortress.
The torrential rains in the Cuban capital caused severe flooding in several municipalities, including Old Havana and Central Havana.
