Animal abuse in Cuba: A dog is left locked inside a house in San José for three days

Cuban animal rights activists reported that the owners of a Siberian Husky puppy left it locked up for three days in an abandoned house in San José de las Lajas, Mayabeque.

Yenney Caballero, a staunch defender of animals in that area, showed the desperation of the animal in a video posted on Facebook.

Neighbors were complaining about the puppy's howling during the day and night.

The woman broke a piece of the acrylic from the door and when she inserted her cell phone camera, she was able to verify that the place was abandoned and that the prisoner was a puppy.

Indignant and not knowing what to do, Caballero finally decided to release the animal through the opening in the acrylic and told the dog's owners to look for her and, if they wanted, report her to the police.

"It's enough with the abuse towards animals, they are not slaves nor prisoners," said the young activist.

"Abusers they are, leaving a dog locked up there for three days without water and without food, because there is nothing there, look, there is no water, no food, there is nothing," he said, showing the interior of the house, which didn't even have furniture.

Caballero has uncovered several serious cases of animal abuse in Cuba, such as the selling of dog meat in Mayabeque.

Recently, animal protectors from the province of Sancti Spíritus celebrated the recovery of Yeiko, a dog that was attacked with a machete by a man last May, and shared a touching video of the dog barking out on the street.

The ARCA Sancti Spíritus Foundation, which raised the alarm and took care of the first aid and care of the dog, reported that on May 20th they became aware of the brutal attack on this dog, an incident that immediately required their efforts to save him.

"When everyone was asleep, our foundation suffered alongside the medical team that was tirelessly fighting to save Yeiko's life," they pointed out on Facebook, also denouncing the horrendous crime.

The Cuban animal rights activists are requesting that the Animal Welfare Decree be changed immediately in favor of harsher penalties for animal abusers.
