Several Cubans are among the displaced by a large-scale arson that consumed the Temple Court apartment complex in the city of Miami.

At least 47 affected individuals, mostly elderly and disabled persons, spent Tuesday night in a shelter set up by city authorities in José Martí Park, in Little Havana, where authorities, Red Cross members, and printing equipment arrived to reprint official documents for those who lost all their belongings, as reported by Telemundo 51.

The mayor Francis Suarez stated that they are working with the private sector to relocate the displaced to hotels, where they will spend the next two weeks while their relocation to new homes is arranged.

The Red Cross took care of replacing the medications that elderly people with chronic conditions could not save.

"I didn't sleep last night, no one imagined this," declared Isabel González, an elderly woman who was left homeless.

Miguel Ángel Gabela, Miami commissioner for District 1, reported that several housing units have been secured for some individuals: "I came this morning because, as I promised you last night, my office has secured 19 units to make available to them," said Gabela.

Regarding the alleged perpetrator of the fire and the pain experienced by the affected people, many were surprised. "They say he was troublesome (...) How can a person set fire to a building?" a neighbor wondered.

The suspect behind the massive fire on Monday lived in one of the apartments at the location.

This is Juan Francisco Figueroa, 73 years old, who was arrested and taken to the Miami-Dade TGK jail in the early hours of Tuesday.

The accused fired several shots, injuring a building employee, and then set the building on fire.

Figueroa, who faces charges of attempted murder with a firearm, felony, and arson, acknowledged what he had done and "expressed that he expected to be in prison for the rest of his life," according to the arrest report.
