The Cuban authorities reported the finding of abandoned boats on the coasts of Guantánamo and Sancti Spíritus.
The Port Captaincy of Guantanamo reported the discovery of a Yola-type boat on March 27, 2024, in the Baitiquirí area, San Antonio del Sur municipality.
The boat is white and blue, measures 8 meters in length, 2.40 meters in beam, and 0.78 meters in draft. It is equipped with two Yamaha outboard engines, each with 75 HP, but it does not have identifying labels.
On the other hand, the Port Captaincy of Casilda, in Sancti Spiritus, reported on a Yola-type boat found on March 29, 2024, in the area of Cayo Bretón, municipality of Trinidad.
This boat has predominant blue and gray colors, with a length of 6.82 meters, beam of 2.17 meters, and depth of 0.75 meters. It has signs on the stern that say "El Fénix" 526-270CR and BPO10K21R1024-100.
Individuals or legal entities with rights over these vessels must appear at the respective captaincies with the documentation proving their ownership within a maximum period of 30 days from the publication of this official note in Granma.
Cuban authorities find abandoned boats on the shores of the archipelago every year. It is believed that these boats are often used by migrants seeking to reach the southern coast of Florida, making transfers at sea.
Also, some vessels have supposedly belonged to drug traffickers in the region who often abandon boats and boats adrift, in circumstances of escape when authorities are close by.
