A Cuban residing in Miami has asked for help from her compatriots to raise funds to assist her mother, who has just lost everything in the fire that occurred on Monday in the building where she lived in the Florida city.
Journalist Ivette Leyva Martínez opened an account on the GoFundMe platform to raise money for her mom, Martha Martínez, one of the affected in the incident that occurred at the Temple Court residential complex, located at 431 NW 3rd Street.
"After 20 years in Miami, at 76 years old and with several health problems, my mother is once again a refugee and will have to start over," Leyva explained.
The woman lost all her possessions in the fire, which has also left other low-income elderly people homeless.
According to Leyva, the fire was intentionally set and is considered the most devastating residential fire in Miami in decades.
I turn to the extensive network of friends seeking their support after this tragic event. Any help is welcome. Thank you in advance," he concluded.
Over 40 residents of the four-story apartment building in Miami that caught fire on Monday were displaced from their homes. Many moved in with family members and others had to seek shelter.
Local 10 witnessed the transfer of several residents, mostly over 60 years old, on Miami trams. Some were accompanied by their pets.
During the extinguishing work, firefighters found a gunshot victim at the entrance of the building, who was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He was later identified as an employee of Atlantic Housing Management, the company that manages the apartments.
Among those affected is the Cuban singer María Antonieta Fernández, who livestreamed the moment when the firefighters and emergency services arrived at the scene.
The artist was forced to leave her home in her pajamas and couldn't save anything, not even the computer where she kept all her artistic material and recordings.
He said he was in the bathroom when it all started, and that the smoke entered his apartment very quickly because the fire broke out very close to his home.
"The firefighters knocked on doors checking and took care of evacuating those who could not leave on their own," he detailed.
