A young Cuban in Uruguay shared a video on TikTok showing a local butcher shop, contrasting this reality with the situation in Cuba.
"This is one of the differences between Cuba and Uruguay. Family, look at this, we are in a butcher shop. Look at the amount of meat here of all kinds. Here you can choose whatever you want," said the user @yudielkaren1 in his video, where he lamented that "unfortunately, in Cuba, there is no opportunity to go to a butcher shop and find meat. Wherever you go in Cuba, it's empty or there is no meat."
In his video, the Cuban also showed the variety of meats he was able to purchase with 1,000 Uruguayan pesos (around 25 US dollars), including chicken, pork, and chorizo.
The amount of meat purchased in Uruguay demonstrates a stark contrast with the scarcity in Cuba, where pork prices recently hovered around 1,100 Cuban pesos per pound. This price surge has been a consequence of inflation on the island, further complicating Cubans' access to staple products like meat.
The video has sparked a wave of reactions on TikTok, where many have commented, showing surprise and empathy: "This kind of person makes Cubans look great, showing education and valuing everything. I am so happy!"; "In Salto with 1,000 pesos they let you come in and greet the butcher"; "What happens in Uruguay happens all over the world, except in Cuba"; "It's great that they can enjoy that privilege, take care of the country where they are since they welcomed you with open arms, blessings," some said.
Its comparison comes at a critical moment for Cuba, where the dollar was trading this Monday in the informal currency market at 350 CUP.
@yudielkaren1's experience in Uruguay not only highlights the disparity in food availability in both countries, but also underscores the difficulties that Cubans face in their home country, exacerbated by economic instability and poor governmental management.
In other videos, the young man has expressed his gratitude towards Uruguay for providing him with opportunities that he did not find in Cuba, a contrast that highlights the differences in quality of life between both countries.
