Cuban tricks to keep the cell phone charged during power outages

Cubans have sought ways to overcome the challenges imposed on them by the prolonged blackouts.

Keeping cell phones charged amid the prolonged and daily power outages that Cubans endure is an odyssey that requires several techniques and ingenuity to prevent the phone from completely shutting down.

When going out in search of experiences about the reality presented by Cubans, the independent media outlet Cubanet encountered diverse responses.

"I pick it up, lower the brightness, close all the applications, and have it in dark mode," said a Cuban woman in a video shared by the media on its X account.

"Some people have a portable charger, which also serves to charge the phone, and there are some music devices, brought from abroad, that also can be used to charge the phone," mentioned another Cuban.

Each small story represents a challenge amid unfavorable conditions, due to the fact that the Cuban government, for months now, has not ensured stability in the national electrical system, leading to widespread blackouts for Cuban families, in addition to food and medicine shortages, uncontrolled inflation, high prices, collapse of public services, increased unsanitary conditions, and the appearance of outbreaks of diseases such as the Oropouche virus.

A few days ago, a Cuban on the social network TikTok shared a video to show "one of the ways" in which they bathe on the island when there is no electricity.

"When the electricity fails and you have to find a way to cool down your body," wrote Yan Carlos, who goes by the handle @con_cuba_barber on the internet and lives in Italy. The Cuban was on vacation on the island.
