The city of Miami Beach announced a new water taxi service to transport passengers to Miami that will begin next Sunday, June 30th.

It is a one-year pilot program thanks to the alliance between the city and Poseidon Ferry, aimed at reducing traffic congestion between Miami Beach and Miami.

"The purpose of this water taxi service crossing the bay is to provide travelers with a public transportation option to help decongest our roads and assist the city in achieving its long-term strategic goal of focusing less on cars," said José R. González, Director of Transportation and Mobility, and Interim Director of Parking.

The program will run every day from 7:30 am to 7:30 pm, except during the hours of 2:00 to 3:00 pm for shift change.

It will start on the north side of the Maurice Gibb Memorial Park (18th Street and Purdy Avenue, Miami Beach) and will end at the Venetian Marina & Yacht Club (1635 N Bayshore Drive, Miami).

The boat will depart from Miami Beach every half hour starting at 7:30 am and will leave Miami every hour on the hour starting at 8:00 am.

The journey lasts about 18 minutes each way.

The ticket costs $5 for residents, $12 for non-residents, $6 for seniors over 65 and disabled military personnel, and is free for Golden Passport holders and children under 12 years old. Weekly and monthly passes are available.

The city will subsidize the program with $600,000 and is seeking additional federal and state grants to expand the program in the future.

"In the long term, I foresee a profitable water taxi service that will transport people efficiently not only to neighboring Miami, but also to the north and south throughout Miami Beach," declared the mayor of Miami Beach, Steven Meiner.

The fares and passes can be purchased on board the water taxi, at www.poseidonferry.com, on the Poseidon Ferry Mobile App, or by phone with a ticketing agent by calling 844.623.3779 between 7:00 am and 7:30 pm every day.
