Part of the facade and roof of a house located on Calzada del Cerro in Havana collapsed this Wednesday, in an incident that adds to the series of collapses in Cuba in recent days.
The property, a two-story mansion from the 19th century, is located at 1360 Calzada Street, between Patria and Saravia streets, and has been at risk of collapsing for many years, according to local residents.
There were no fatalities or injuries reported as a result of the partial collapse of the building that occurred in the morning.
According to a statement published by the Municipal Administration Council (CAM) of Cerro on its official Facebook page, only "the wall of an uninhabited Education Department facility" had collapsed.
Shortly after noon, the CAM reported that "at the time of the collapse, no pedestrian or vehicle circulating on Calzada del Cerro where it was located was affected."
Additionally, he pointed out that SECONS brigades and the electric company "are taking measures to work on cleaning up the area."
However, the Facebook page La Tijera stated that for many years a public school operated in the building, and today several families live there.
The regime finished demolishing the facade after the collapse, but inside, several families are still living there with nowhere to go, the post warned.
A neighbor from the neighborhood also assured the independent newspaper 14ymedio that in the back part of the building, historically known as the Old House of Mrs. Luz Godínez de Diago, there are currently families residing, but the front area, attached to the facade, was not inhabited.
The digital site confirmed that, after the collapse occurred, a demolition crew arrived, equipped to knock down the walls that were still standing.
Calzada del Cerro and Patria. Every time I pass by here, I say it's going to fall, and part of its structure fell. A lot of rain these days, too much humidity, and when the sun comes out, that's when it happens," a post in the Cerro Municipality Facebook group pointed out.
Just one block away from where the collapse occurred this Wednesday, less than a week ago, the collapse of a wall onto the roof of a house was reported, resulting in the death of one of its residents and injuring two other people. The tragic event took place in the early hours of Friday, on Calzada del Cerro, between Carvajal and Patria.
In just one week, dozens of collapses have affected several municipalities in the capital, since last June 18, when the collapse of a circulation corridor in a building on Monte Street, between Águila and Ángeles, in Old Havana, where at least one person was injured.
After this event, a chain of collapses has occurred one after the other, not only in the province of Havana, but also several incidents have been reported in Matanzas, as far as we know.
These unfortunate events demonstrate the alarming state of deterioration of homes and other properties in Cuba, due to lack of maintenance of the buildings.
Far from being isolated incidents, they are part of a recurring pattern that highlights the ineffective management of the Cuban government in terms of construction and repair of infrastructure.
