Birthmark reveals new lead in case of missing child in Puerto Rico 25 years ago

The new clues place Rolandito in a state on the northeast coast of the United States, according to authorities.

A birthmark has rekindled the hopes of the meeting of Rolando Salas Jusino, known as "Rolandito," who was reported missing as a child 25 years ago in Puerto Rico.

“Information has emerged that we can say we have been working on for several months, taking us outside of Puerto Rico, and leading us to identify a person,” said Alexis Torres, Secretary of the Department of Public Security (DSP) before the press on the island, without providing further details that could “harm the investigation.”

The official determined that the case has taken on a new momentum following the reactivation of Interpol's operations in Puerto Rico.

I have to say that in this particular case, the information and intelligence have been important based on "specific data" related to characteristics that are "very similar to the last photo of Rolandito," stated the Secretary of the DSP.

“There are some parts that are physical resemblances, but there are also some investigative parts that are being carried out, of certain data that is being corroborated,” he pointed out, to indicate that the previous intelligence work has helped them to be on the path they are on today.

The recent revelation brought new hope for "Rolandito's" dad, Rolando Salas Cardona, in his quest to find his son, who would turn 30 this October.

"The next thing they (the police) are going to do is travel to the state where this person is located and perform a DNA test," the father anticipated, indicating that this confidential information is the "greatest hope" he has had in being able to find his son alive.

Precisely, the disclosure that has reignited interest in this case is a person indicating that they work with Salas Jusino and "has a lot of information," and claims that "it's Rolandito," the father explained in an interview with TeleOnce channel.

"We are working to locate this person, to see if we can carry out a DNA test on him," said Robert Ramos, chief of the criminal investigations unit of Puerto Rico exclusively to Telemundo New England.

Ramos indicated that the person they understand as 'Rolandito' is in one of the states on the northeast coast of the United States.

This official stated that over the years, numerous pieces of information have emerged. Among them were the death of the child and his burial in different places. Others claimed that the child was alive in the Dominican Republic, while another piece of information placed him in the United States.

"Rolandito" disappeared from the park in the Colinas del Plata development in Toa Alta, Puerto Rico on July 7, 1999. At that time, he was 4 years old.

One of the main suspects in the disappearance was the child's stepfather, Roberto Gotay, who told the mother a few days earlier, "I'm going to hurt you with what hurts you the most." On July 10th, he claimed it was a "joke."

In October 1999, the search for the minor began in the United States, thanks to an inter-agency group made up of the police, Interpol, and the FBI.

Since those years to date, there have been received confidences; however, it is particularly striking that every time the authorities try to approach the person, they disappear.

"We had him located at a certain point, but we lost track. Now we are readjusting our investigations and we are closer to finding the person," added Interpol's director in Puerto Rico, Laura Peña, to Telemundo Puerto Rico.

"Unfortunately, when we arrive, the person has moved, and it takes us time to locate them again or receive information. These are red flags that we raise because it is really strange for someone to be in a job, have someone approach them, immediately resign, and disappear — it's definitely not normal," Torres added.
