A young Cuban man identified as Alexey Calas Rojas remains in critical condition in Santiago de Cuba after throwing himself off the roof of his house in a presumed suicide attempt.
The family denied the rumor of the man's death and stated that he is reported to be in critical condition, as reported on Facebook by independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta.
Cala Rojas, who resides on 12th Street in the Altamira neighborhood, suffers from mental disorders. Despite the efforts made by his family for him to be admitted to the psychiatric facilities in the province, they did not succeed in getting him referred to any of the available facilities, the publication explains.
The young man jumped off the roof of his house on Monday and landed on the power line, specifically on a group of high-voltage cables.
He was transferred to the Military Hospital Joaquín Castillo Duany, due to its proximity to the Altamira neighborhood, but at night he was referred to the Provincial Hospital Saturnino Lora.
The young man "has a fractured jaw, skull, one leg, and injuries from electric shocks to the stomach," a cousin said.
He stated that they are waiting for the swelling to go down before taking him into the operating room, while criticizing the delay in performing the surgical procedure.
"He is a good boy and very loved by everyone," the family affirms.
People suffering from mental illnesses and behavioral and personality disorders, among other mental disorders, have been particularly vulnerable to pharmaceutical shortages, one of the many problems that Cubans face in their daily lives.
At the same time, suicide rates have surged in Cuba following the worsening of the economic situation, characterized by rampant inflation, a shortage of food and basic necessities, and an unprecedented migratory crisis.
