Cuban comedian Ulises Toirac boasted on social media this Wednesday about having in his possession a coin with the image of singer Celia Cruz (1925-2003), which will officially circulate in the United States starting August 12th.
"In my hand already," said the comedian on Facebook as he showed the coin, which is part of the American Women Quarters 2024 program through which the U.S. government recognizes five illustrious female personalities of the nation.
"On Friday, on Friday!" wrote Toirac, who also took the opportunity to mention that on that day he will make a proposal related to the Queen of Salsa.
By the end of this week, I have two things for you: a surprise and a proposal that I think you're going to love," Toirac announced last Monday on social media. The comedian has been promoting an initiative for days, only revealing that it is related to a Cuban singer.
The popular comedian recently acknowledged the devotion he feels for the figure of Celia Cruz. He recalled that in 2015, during a work-related visit, he took part in a celebration of Independence Day.
At the Museum of American History in Washington, "I remember walking through the entrance door and seeing a whole wall of the lobby filled with colors, highlighting the image of Celia Cruz and the Cuban flag."
"I suddenly felt that in that place there was a piece of my most intimate personality, of my cres, my home, my roots," he noted.
"They were paying tribute to the unparalleled talent of a daughter of this island. And, therefore, to the culture of Cuba. That is to be an ambassador of culture and of the nation. Only the very great of a country achieve that. It is surprising to Toirac that in the United States they pay tribute to Cruz, who is censored in her home country, although not forgotten."
"I felt so extremely proud in that piece of museum, that it is something I will not be able to forget as long as I live," he wrote excitedly.
Toirac mentioned at that moment that holding onto that coin –which he already possesses– would feel "a bit like that day in Washington. Infinite thanks."
Celia Cruz's followers, all over the world, do not forget the imprint and work of the unique Cuban singer.
Her admirers gathered in New York on July 16th to pay tribute to the iconic "Guarachera de Cuba" on the 21st anniversary of her death.
