Landslide in Guanabacoa leaves one dead

The victim was identified as Miguel, 60 years old.

A 60-year-old man died as a result of a collapse that occurred on Wednesday in the Havana municipality of Guanabacoa, confirmed Cuban authorities and neighbors of the victim.

The news was shared on social media by the Municipal Board of Directors, according to which the collapse of the facade of building number 61 seriously injured a neighbor identified as Miguel, 60 years old, who was treated quickly but later died due to the severity of his injuries.

The official publication did not offer other details about the incident, but several residents in that area stated that the event has left "all the neighbors very upset" due to the housing situation in that zone.

For his part, the internet user Wilhems Concepción Bejerano reported that the collapsed house was near the bakery El Iris, in front of the so-called Casa de las Cadenas, which also collapsed.

Several internet users reacted to the posts stating that "at any moment the Casa de las Cadenas is going to collapse and everyone around it is going to end up crushed. It's going to fall onto the Bakery and on the people who are in line and the vendors who stand there," said a woman who knows the mentioned Havana neighborhood.

Another respondent said that the disaster would have been worse if the collapse had happened "on a Sunday when the bakery line is on that same sidewalk. The worst part is that they don't let you speak; but this has left me very upset because they shouldn't have waited for someone to die," she emphasized.

Collapses in Havana have become frequent amid a deteriorating housing heritage. However, authorities do not usually release the total number of victims caused by these collapses.
