In a landmark move, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, announced his decision to withdraw from the presidential race in an official statement issued this Sunday, in which he explained the reasons behind his determination and the achievements of his administration.
According to sources close to the president, in recent days, Biden was seriously considering the possibility of abandoning his candidacy for re-election, a decision he made official this Sunday through the social network X.
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your president. And although it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country that I withdraw and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term," Biden stated in his letter to the nation.
The president announced that this week he will address the nation and explain more details about the reasons that led him to make this decision.
"Allow me to express my deepest gratitude to all those who have worked so hard to see me re-elected," and he mentioned Vice President Kamala Harris, whom he described as "an extraordinary partner in all this work."
"Allow me to express my most sincere gratitude to the American people for the trust and faith they have placed in me," emphasized Biden, who recently tested positive for COVID-19.
“During the last three and a half years, we have made great progress as a nation. Today, the United States has the strongest economy in the world,” he stated.
In his statement, Biden highlighted among the main achievements of his administration, historic investments in the rebuilding of the nation, the reduction of prescription drug costs for seniors, and the expansion of affordable healthcare to a record number of Americans.
In addition, he emphasized that during his administration, critical care was provided to one million veterans exposed to toxic substances, the first gun safety law in 30 years was approved, and the first African American woman was appointed to the Supreme Court. The most significant climate legislation in the history of the world was also approved.
Biden emphasized that these achievements would not have been possible without the support of the American people. "Together, we overcame a once-in-a-century pandemic and the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. We have protected and preserved our democracy, and we have revitalized and strengthened our alliances around the world,” he noted.
"I believe today what I have always believed: that there is nothing the United States cannot do when we do it together. We just have to remember that we are the United States of America," Biden concluded.
Despite the successes he listed, following the debacle he starred in during the debate against Donald Trump last June, the president faced numerous pressures to withdraw.
Former United States President Barack Obama stated last Thursday that Biden should seriously consider his candidacy for the upcoming elections, as the path to a Democratic victory had become significantly narrower.
