Ernesto Figueredo Alarcón, a 23-year-old Cuban who was fighting for his life after being shot by a friend and neighbor who is a police officer in a strange incident last week, has died.

In the last hours, relatives of the victim have reacted with deep sorrow on social media to the young man's death.

"What an unfair way you left us! You didn't deserve this, my boy. Why, my child, with a whole life ahead of you and they took it away like that? My God, nothing, nothing, will repair your loss, the immense pain we all feel who knew you and that we will never see you again," wrote Delia Ramírez on social media.

The young woman added that she will always remember her friend as someone "cheerful and happy," who never harmed anyone.

"My brother damn…, rest. You fought until the last minute. I know it. I still can't believe it, look at the plans we had damn… It's not fair, justice for you, my little brother. I love you to the moon. You were the brother I never had," wrote Josh González in another heart-wrenching farewell.

On July 19, Ernesto Figueredo Alarcón was injured in his own home, in the Rosa La Bayamesa neighborhood, by a friend who works as a police officer and lives in the upstairs of his house.

According to the family, as reported to the independent portal CubaNet, the incident allegedly occurred last Friday at around 6:10 PM when both were alone in a room talking. There was no problem between them, and they were not arguing when the shot was heard.

After the tragic event, the shooter -known as "Chucho"- was arrested, but according to the mentioned source, the authorities had not yet informed the young man's family about the statement made by the arrested individual regarding what had happened.

Ernesto was admitted to intensive care at the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Provincial General Hospital with a diagnosis of brain death. He had a bullet lodged in his brain.

In a previous post on social media, Delia Ramírez denied that the individual was a sector chief, as reported in some publications, although she did question that "Chucho" had a weapon, as he was a person with mental health issues.

"Before, he worked on the anti-vector campaign and then he took a course, became a police officer, and was given a weapon, to a person who is not in their right mind," he lamented.

According to Delia, at the moment of the shot, there was a witness: Ernesto's nephew, a six-year-old boy.

"How it happened and why, only they know. Ernesto has no way to tell it, Chucho hasn’t wanted to talk, and the boy is only six years old and is too traumatized by what he witnessed," he emphasized.

Until the publication of this note, official media outlets have not commented on what happened.
