The staircase of a multifamily building collapsed on Thursday night in Old Havana, leaving several residents in the area cut off, according to the Municipal Administrative Council (CAM) on social media.
The official source indicated that there are no fatalities to mourn, although it did not clarify if there were any injuries as a result of the incident.
The property, located at Villegas 256 between Obrapía and Lamparilla streets, collapsed around 8:10 p.m. (local time).
The brief official note also did not refer to the number of family units or the total figure of those affected as a result of the collapse. They only limited themselves to stating that the firefighters took care of evacuating "the units" that were left cut off.
The independent outlet Cubanet reported that a woman was injured in the collapse and that among those trapped in the building after the staircase collapsed were children and even a pregnant woman.
The cited independent source detailed that the incident occurred after the house of a man named Nelson collapsed, and they added that the firefighters spent about an hour trying to rescue the pregnant woman who was inside.
The source specified that, after a long wait, the firefighters were able to rescue two minors and 11 more people.
Residents in nearby buildings, which also have a deteriorated structure, were not evacuated as a precaution.
Such landslides are recurrent in Old Havana.
In March, rescue and salvamento teams assisted three people who were trapped inside another multifamily building in Old Havana after two of the floors of the building collapsed.
In that case, the incident occurred on San Isidro street number 110, between Habana and Damas, and several people were left cut off from communication, although fortunately there were no fatalities either.
