The Cuban René Matos Urgellés passed away on Tuesday, August 6, in Guantánamo, due to the injuries he sustained in the tragic accident that occurred on Monday in Loma de Mariana, San Antonio del Sur municipality.
More than 20 passengers were traveling in a tractor when the driver lost control of the vehicle and it overturned. In the accident, 23 people were injured, including five children.
The journalist Miguel Reyes, known on Facebook as Miguel Noticias, reported that the citizen Leivis Leyva Lambert, 59 years old, is in serious condition but reported as stable in the intermediate care unit at the Hospital of Guantánamo.
Three other patients remain hospitalized in the Orthopedic ward, reported as under care. The other injured individuals have been discharged after being reevaluated by the health center doctors.
The authorities of Guantánamo have initiated an investigation to determine the exact causes of the accident, which is attributed to a mechanical failure in the tractor.
This case has highlighted the need to review the regulations regarding the transportation of people in agricultural vehicles and to improve road infrastructure in rural areas.
The community of San Antonio del Sur has shown its solidarity by offering support and resources to the affected families. Local organizations and the provincial government have promised assistance to the victims and their families.
