Two Cuban families in Miami-Dade are demanding a solution after being without electricity in their homes for more than two weeks.

Two families feel that they are being tossed back and forth without their problem being resolved.

Four families from a housing community in southwest Miami-Dade - at least two of them of Cuban origin - have been without power for sixteen days.

"This seems to be happening in Cuba, but it's happening here in the United States and in an association where I pay 450 pesos every month," said Humberto Sotolongo, one of the affected, in statements to Telemundo 51.

"The house is stinking horribly, you can't be inside because these houses are designed for the air conditioning to work," added the victim, who cannot believe he is going through such a terrible experience in the United States.

Sotolongo says that the response they received from an electrician from the association does not convince them.

They were told that a rat had bitten the main cable and that this had caused a short circuit, the rat had been electrocuted and the power went out.

Neighbors called Florida Power & Light (FPL), but the electric company said that there were damaged cables and that it was not safe to restore the service.

The president of the neighborhood association, for his part, says that the solution is in the hands of the FPL, but the electric company seems to be washing its hands of the matter, and they have been like this for more than two weeks, in a constant back-and-forth that has the affected individuals on the brink of despair.

"This is a gym mattress that we had in the house, and we had to take it outside because around midnight, no one can stand being inside the house due to the heat," commented Reinaldo García, another affected resident who lives in one of the homes with his wife and two children.

"I never imagined in my life that in this country I would be going through this," stated Reinaldo's wife, expressing a sentiment shared by both families who have been in agony for 16 days.

Although four families were affected, two were able to temporarily move to another place.

At the close of this note, there is no further information available about the unique case.
