A 24-year-old Cuban citizen was shot in the middle of downtown Tapachula, in the border state of Chiapas, Mexico, in an incident that the police have classified as an attempted kidnapping.

Identified as Yurisdel “N”, the Cuban was at an ATM of the BBVA bank located at the intersection of 4th North and Central West when alleged hitmen attempted to kidnap him, local media reported.

The attackers fired a shot that struck a nearby wall, while the Cuban was able to take shelter in a nearby bakery and thus protect his life.

This event drew the attention of the local residents, who activated their alarms and speculations, saying that what had happened was a robbery at the bank facility, a claim that was later debunked.

Mexican police elements were mobilized to the location, carrying out a strong operation in the area, and they also transferred Yurisdel to one of their facilities to give a statement regarding the incident.

"At the site, a fired shell casing of 9 millimeter caliber was found," noted the local media El Orbe.

These events highlight the difficult conditions faced by migrants embarking on a journey, whose main destination is the border with the United States and entering that country legally to seek political asylum.

In May, a Cuban migrant passed away inside the apartment he was renting in the Costa Verde condominium in Tapachula, Chiapas state, Mexico.

The media outlet Ultimatum Mx reported that the tragic event occurred when the Cuban José Pablo "N" suffered an alleged cardiac arrest.

Months earlier, Mexican justice sentenced a Cuban to 30 years in prison for brutally murdering his ex-partner in a bar in Tapachula at the end of November 2023.

The Attorney General's Office of the State (FGE), through the Prosecutor's Office Against Femicide, achieved the sentencing of Iván Cabrera Martínez for the femicide of his ex-partner Yarlenis Ortiz.
