A severe local storm that occurred on Saturday afternoon caused heavy flooding in several towns in Las Tunas, including damage to electrical installations and harm to agricultural crops, according to official sources.
The correspondence from the Cuban News Agency (ACN) in the territory of Tuner reported that the storm was accompanied by "strong winds, lightning, and a locally intense accumulated rainfall of 133.5 millimeters (mm)."
The Meteorological Station located in the provincial capital of Tunera recorded 79 mm of precipitation and a wind gust of 73 km/h, as of 6:00 pm, when it was still raining but with lower intensity, said Alexey Moreno Borges, technical deputy director of the Meteorological Center.
The weather phenomenon left impressive images of the flooding in the city of Las Tunas.
Followers of the independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada sent a video showing the waters flowing through the city.
The images were recorded in the La Loma neighborhood, very close to the provincial bus terminal, the communicator noted.
It also indicated that the rains caused flooding on Calle 48 between 67 and Waldemar Díaz.
Meteorological specialists indicated that this local storm was due to favorable conditions and strong daytime heating, with a maximum temperature during this day of 35.0 degrees Celsius.
They also highlighted as significant the electrical discharges that were practically continuous during the more than two hours that the rain lasted.
El Periódico 26 de Las Tunas added that there were several impacts on the electric service caused by the storm, which, they said, are still being addressed.
Currently, the TK10 circuit, which supplies the area of La Caldosa and El Cornito, is affected, said René Rocío Pupo, the deputy director of the Electric Company in Las Tunas, to the state press.
The TK5 circuit is also affected, from the Azcuba entrance to Río Potrero, with several interruptions between tripped transformers and affected services in the residential sector.
The official warned that there are five work teams currently looking for and solving each of these failures, one of which is from the municipality of Puerto Padre, which came to support the provincial capital.
