Vanesa de la Caridad Fernández Martínez, 14 years old and the only survivor of the tragic accident that claimed the lives of four members of the same family last Wednesday in the Luyanó neighborhood of Havana, died early this Wednesday at the Juan Manuel Márquez Pediatric Hospital, where she had been hospitalized since the tragedy.
The information was disclosed by the Internet user Lili Rubio in a Facebook group where she documented information shared by a WhatsApp group that was addressing the needs of the sensitive case.
According to the cited testimony, the minor was struggling for her life with "third-degree burns on her body" and was "inflamed from toxic gases."
At noon on this Wednesday, Vanesa had a cardiac arrest that she survived, but she ended up passing away just before midnight.
The teenager was laid to rest at the funeral home in Santa Catalina, in the municipality of Diez de Octubre, where the deceased family lived.
"Sad news. Speechless. I am devastated by this event. I thank all the people who made donations. God will thank you," wrote Lili Rubio, who had special words of gratitude for those who took care of transporting the family and loved ones of the deceased minor.
Today marks exactly one week since the tragic fire that occurred on August 15.
According to neighbors reported to the independent portal 14ymedio, in the house where the explosion occurred, located at 203 Marqués de la Torre Street, there were two motorcycles.
One of them was charging during the early morning before the tragedy. Shortly after seven in the morning last Wednesday, it exploded, and the fire reached the second vehicle, making the scene even more violent.
Despite the neighbors trying to help rescue the residents of the house, the front door was locked with a gate and padlock, making it impossible to access.
As a result of the incident, initially a couple, Andrés Herrera and Yiliam Martínez, and a cousin of the family who was in the house, passed away.
From the location, two minors were rescued alive by the firefighters: Verónica, one year old; and Vanesa, 14 years old.
The little one passed away shortly after the tragedy, and Vanessa fought for her life until this Tuesday.
In recent days, a petition circulated on social media asking for help to obtain medication for Vanesa. However, unfortunately, it has been confirmed this Wednesday that the teenager has died.
On social media, hundreds of people have expressed their dismay at the tragedy and are calling for an end to a type of accident that has become too common in Cuba in recent years, which in the worst cases has resulted in the death of entire families.
