The sudden death of a young Cuban doctor, originally from Santiago de Cuba but working as a physician in Mantilla, in the Havana municipality of Arroyo Naranjo, has generated profound expressions of sorrow on social media in the last two days among his colleagues and loved ones.

Identified as Octavio Martínez Merbillet, the causes of the doctor's death are not clear, although he died of natural causes.

"He got sick with that pandemic that we don't really know what it is. It complicated to such an extent that his colleagues couldn’t do anything. Very sad, a tremendous person has left us," wrote an internet user identified as Arledis Matos.

That description of what happened was denied by Yessi Torres, who indicated that it was not "because of the virus."

Yanely Gámez, who identified herself as the aunt of the young man's wife, said that it is still "not known" what he died from.

“Thanks to all your neighbors, friends, and especially to the management of the Mantilla polyclinic and its entire staff, the medical team from Julio Trigo. Without words, Yanny and everyone are grateful for what they could do and what they couldn't. Rest in peace, black, wrote,” Gámez.

Beyond the uncertainty regarding the cause of death, the displays of affection following the young doctor's passing are truly impressive.

"How to say goodbye to a friend? How to say goodbye to a colleague? There are no answers that can comfort the pain we all feel... We have lost a physician, an exceptional doctor, a special man...", wrote Mirtania Borges Ortiz.

"We will never forget you, you will always be in each of us who knew you. We do not accept your loss. I know you will be with us. May God welcome you into His kingdom. Fly high, Dr. Octavio Martínez Merbillet," he added.

Mirtania Borges shared a photo of a kind of altar in honor of the deceased doctor, apparently set up in the Mantilla hospital or in the 24th office of that neighborhood, which was where he consulted according to several sources that converge on this point.

“Your death will not only bring sadness to us, your family and loved ones, but also to those who knew you and received your care when they needed your service; they will be the ones who suffer the most from your departure because you are a great doctor, an exceptional doctor,” says part of the letter.

In addition to flowers, a photo and her white coat, a letter with a moving text completed the tribute.

"See you soon, friend... Fly high, healer," wrote Yessi Torres in the Facebook group Somos Mantilla along with the images.

Some people reported good experiences with the doctor as a physician. Among them, the most touching was that of a man who mentioned that he first treated a fracture in his grandmother and that in recent months he had been following his wife's pregnancy.

"An excellent doctor in addition to being a good human being. When my grandmother, may she rest in peace, had her health issue due to her fracture, he was present at all times without hesitating for a second, always willing. He was a doctor who loved his profession and loved his patients, and now during my wife's pregnancy, he was equally present. That’s why my wife and I have decided today, on the day our baby was born, which by the way was the day he said, to name our child Jonatán Octavio in honor of our brave and humane doctor," he wrote.

As of the closing of this note, there are no other details about the tragic death of the young doctor.
