A thief is captured inside a house in Santiago de Cuba.

Residents of the city of Santiago de Cuba captured a thief who broke into a house on Aguilera Street on Saturday night.

The independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada shared on Facebook photos and videos showing around twenty people gathered in front of the house, asking the police to hand over the criminal so they could seek justice themselves.

Apparently, the residents of the house themselves were the ones who caught the suspect and called the Police.

According to Mayeta, the patrol arrived within minutes thanks to the proximity of the "La Motorizada" Police Unit.

Before taking the wrongdoer out of the house, two officers had a small dispute, including some pushing, which drew the attention of everyone present.

The thief, a young man in his twenties, was pulled out of the building without a shirt and quickly put into the vehicle, amid the shouts and insults of the crowd.

"These cries have been very recurrent lately, after the police's little effectiveness in the city, where a few days later, the wrongdoer is seen back on the street," the reporter commented.

It is significant that the housing portal is completely gated, which indicates that even this measure of protection does not stop criminals in Cuba.

The growing wave of thefts and crime in Cuba, along with the inability and disinterest of the authorities in reinforcing security, often leads the population to spontaneously take matters into their own hands to capture criminals.

Last week, also in Santiago de Cuba, a man who snatched a woman's purse in the Plaza de Marte park was detained by bystanders and the police who were patrolling the area.

The alleged thief had fled after robbing the lady of her belongings, but he was caught.

In April, residents of the city of Santiago detained a thief who snatched a cell phone from a teenager standing at the door of his house, and they kept him immobilized until the Police arrived.

Yosmany Mayeta shared a video of the young man in detention surrounded by a crowd. In the images, the young man's state of anxiety was evident, as well as what appeared to be an injury to one of his eyes, which looked swollen shut.

Finally, agents from the Ministry of the Interior arrived at the place where the young man was tied up (apparently, the portal of a house) and took charge of the arrest.

At the end of February, neighbors and passersby caught a thief who assaulted an elderly woman in the Diez de Octubre municipality, in Havana.

In a video that circulated on the Internet, an angry crowd watched as the man was put into a police car after his arrest. In the recording, someone could be heard claiming that the young man assaulted a person, although they did not specify what was stolen.
