The Cuba Ice Hockey team, made up of players of Cuban origin residing in the United States, made history by being crowned champions of Division 1 of the Amerigol Latam Cup 2024, the largest Latin American ice hockey tournament in the world.

This edition featured the participation of 52 teams from 19 nations, in various categories. For the first time since these games began in 2019, a Cuban team joined the competition. They debuted in two levels: Division 1, where they managed to seize the title, and Division 3.

In the Division 1 final, held last Sunday at 5:00 p.m. in Fort Lauderdale, the Cuban team faced Greece in an exciting match that ended with the triumph of the Cubans with a score of 4-3, in a game full of emotions.

Ice hockey with Latin American players

The Amerigol Latam Cup is an international tournament that aims to showcase the talent of hockey players from Latin America and the Caribbean. NHL noted that the four goals that secured victory for the Cubans this Sunday were scored by Mahigan Decontie, Brian Brown (2), and Nicholas Amaya.

The mission of the International Amerigol Hockey Association is to provide players the opportunity to showcase their talent, as well as to promote the growth of hockey in their home countries and among Latin American communities in North America.

During the event, commentator Erica L. Ayala closed the championship with a powerful reflection: "Cuba took the title over Greece, but this was a reminder that hockey must be and is for everyone."

This message reinforces the organization's motto, which celebrated inclusion with the message "We too play hockey!"

The Cuban team stood out for its coordination on the ice, highlighted the growing interest and participation of the island's diaspora in sports, and demonstrated that hockey is also a passion that unites.

Cubans lead Latin hockey in the U.S.

The tournament has established itself as a true celebration of Latin American hockey. Since its inception, it has served as a platform for players from countries that are not traditionally associated with ice hockey, such as Cuba, to showcase their talent and compete at the highest level.

This year, the event demonstrated the growing interest of Latin Americans in this sport and how hockey is expanding beyond its traditional boundaries.

The Amerigol Latam Cup is not just a hockey tournament; it is a celebration of diversity and an opportunity for players from all over the continent to shine on an international stage.
