In a video shared on TikTok, the Cuban Moraima Lescay (@moraimalescay), who recently returned from the island, describes the reality that Cubans live on the island.
"Guys, I just got back from Cuba, I just came from the doctor because my arm was swollen. Cuba is tough!" the Cuban woman begins to say in her video. In this clip, Moraima calls on those who have family or friends in Cuba to send them money or recharge their cards, as, according to her words, "there is hunger in Cuba."
The woman recounts that many face unbearable heat and a lack of food that exhausts them. "A head of garlic costs sixty pesos. An avocado costs one hundred pesos. A pound of pork is one thousand one hundred pesos," she points out, highlighting the disproportionate cost of basic food items compared to the low wages of many Cubans, who, according to her, earn barely 1,500 pesos a month.
The Cuban also comments on the visible desperation in the streets of Havana, mentioning that she has seen elderly people and young people rummaging through the garbage. "No one is going to tell me the story, I saw it," she asserts, lamenting the state of the streets, where trash can take up to half a block.
"I don't understand how in the corners of Cuba, at least in Havana, where I was, there is so much garbage. It’s incredible that this happens where the president lives. But of course, since he is well, he doesn’t care about the people," he criticizes.
The woman concludes her video by warning about the fear that Cubans feel when it comes to expressing themselves freely. "The few people that remain in Cuba are suffocated and you can't tell them anything because they are afraid. Cubans are afraid even to talk. I was scared of everyone; I didn't trust anyone there because you don't know who the informant is," she confesses, emphasizing the climate of distrust and repression that, according to her testimony, prevails on the island.
Finally, he makes an urgent call for solidarity: "I am going to kindly ask those who have friends in Cuba to send at least a carton of eggs," he concludes, highlighting the desperate need for support that Cubans have at this time.
In reaction to his words, many Cubans agree with what he describes in his video. "Very true, I arrived 4 months ago from Cuba. It’s terrible there," "That's right, you have spoken the truth about how Cuba is. People are afraid to speak," "I believe you, I’ve been here for a month and left that place in flames," "All of that is true, I travel a lot to Cuba and it’s true," or "You express yourself very well and speak the pure reality. You say what’s happening without any exaggeration," commented some users.
