A resident of Santiago was seen this Wednesday walking a pig through the streets of the historic center of the city.
A person identified as Yayu López shared a photo on Facebook showing a man walking a pig through the streets of Santiago de Cuba.
The internet user commented: “When you take your pet for a walk with all the proud attitude that many would want to be you,” emphasizing that, amid the food shortages affecting the city, having an animal like this is a reason for envy, as a pound of pork costs 750 pesos in Santiago de Cuba.
In the comments section, the author of the post specified that the photo of the "puppy" was taken on Barnada Street, in the city center.
In June, the price of pork reached the staggering figure of 1,100 pesos per pound in Havana, becoming one of the many prohibitive foods for the vast majority of the population.
During the summer of 2023, pork cost 550 pesos per pound, half the current price, which shows that in just one year the amount of money people have to pay has doubled if they want to eat one of the preferred foods among Cubans.
The ground meat and pork steak were priced at 1,150 pesos per pound. The pork loin and leg remained at 780 pesos per pound.
The minimum wage set after the "economic ordering" in Cuba is 2,100 CUP. Many workers cannot bring home three pounds of pork for a family lunch.
