Stephanie, the seven-year-old girl who was run over on Monday by a 92-year-old woman outside a pharmacy in Coral Gables, Miami-Dade, died as a result of the severe head injuries she sustained.
Cuban Yoany Figueredo, father of the minor, explained in statements to Univision that after being in an induced coma for four days, the doctors confirmed that the minor was brain dead.
"My daughter has officially passed away. They reported a brain death. The procedure was done, and I was present. All the tests were conducted, and she did not respond. The mother and I decided to donate all her organs," the father stated, very distressed.
In a ceremony with all her family, Stephanie will be taken to save more lives wearing the clothing she would have worn to celebrate her eighth birthday on September 21.
"We are going to honor her like this, wearing that dress. By donating her organs, she becomes a hero," said the father through tears.
As part of another gesture that will immortalize her, Stephanie's heartbeat was recorded and placed inside a teddy bear that has become a very special object for the family in recent hours.
"When they gave it to me and I heard it, I broke down," admits the girl's father.
In statements to the aforementioned media, a teacher from the school where the seven-year-old girl was in second grade explained that she was "brilliant" and that they had the privilege of giving her the highest grade in all subjects not because they wanted to, but because she deserved more than that.
"In seven years, if we manage to do what she did in seven years, the world will be very different," concluded the minor's professor.
The father of the girl -who calls for more controls for elderly drivers- says that his daughter evoked much affection as she passed by because she was someone special, and he is clear that despite her physical departure "Stephanie came to stay" in everyone's heart.
At the moment the tragic accident occurred, mother and daughter were shopping together in preparation for the birthday celebration of the girl's older brother, which was that same day.
Previously, the girl's father explained that the minor was holding her mother's hand and they were going to cross the street.
“A car was coming, they stopped, the car passed, another car was coming from far away, they continued crossing, and out of nowhere the car that hit her came,” Figueredo explained about the accident, which occurred at the exit of the Navarro pharmacy located at 2120 Southwest 23rd Avenue, in Coral Gables.
The youngest was the smallest of four children of Yoany Figueredo, but the only daughter of her mother.
The nonagenarian driver -who remained at the scene of the accident and whose identity has not been revealed- confused the accelerator with the brake, which is believed to have been the cause of the fatal accident that has mourned a family and abruptly ended the life of a young girl.
The woman was summoned by the authorities for negligent driving, but it is not clear if she will face any charges for what happened.
