At least three people were injured following the collision of a truck and a "almendrón" type car in Vedado, Havana, at dawn on this Sunday.

According to a report on Facebook, just before 6:00 a.m., a collision occurred between both vehicles at the intersection of 3rd and 12th, when the almendrón was hit by a truck coming down that last street.

"At around 6:00 am, at the corner of 3rd and 12th streets in El Vedado, the crash between the blue almendrón and the green and red truck coming down 12th street woke up almost the entire neighborhood," said internet user Raúl Córdova in a post with photos taken after the incident.

Córdova reported that "the driver of the almendrón got stuck and the rescuers pulled him out," while "two boys fell from the top of the truck," but did not provide details about the severity of the injuries of the three people.

"Finally, a tragic Sunday dawn," concluded the author of the post. The photos show the presence at the scene of a fire truck and an ambulance.

According to the comments on the post, allegedly neither of the two drivers respected the traffic rules that require reducing speed and stopping if necessary when the red and yellow lights of the traffic light are flashing during the early morning.

However, a user named Pedro Ricardo Sánchez González noted that the problem at that intersection is that "the traffic signals for low traffic times are wrong; 3rd has the priority and yet has the red signal, while 12, which has the stop sign, has the yellow signal. So we come to the problem that the driver coming from 3rd, who knows they have priority over 12, does not stop at the red light, and the driver coming from 12, who has never had priority over 3rd, sees a yellow light and does not stop because they think they have priority. Well, sadly, what happened happened."

Sánchez pointed out that "the traffic light used to work well, but after a repair, it ended up like this, with 3rd having a flashing red light and 12th having a yellow light, when 3rd has always had priority."

Another Cuban identified as Artyom Chyornyj also stated that "at that early hour, the traffic lights should be on flashing yellow for 3rd and flashing red for 12, or flashing red for both streets," and concluded: "In any case, you can't let yourself be guided by the time when there is little traffic. You must reduce speed before passing the traffic-controlled intersection and stop if necessary."

Although the incident did not have fatal consequences, Robiet Pérez Pereyra took the opportunity to reflect on the irresponsibility of drivers and pedestrians on Cuban streets and roads: “The recklessness of Cubans driving and walking in the street knows no bounds. It doesn't matter whether as a pedestrian, on a motorcycle, in a car, or whatever. I don't know what else they need to call themselves to reason and common sense.”

Pérez analyzed that "these are imprudences and accidents one after another that plunge entire families into tragedy, in addition to the material losses with the effort it takes. Everyone feels untouchable until they end up crying. Please!!! And I don’t say this about this particular case; the street has become a jungle beyond the blackouts at traffic lights, the destroyed roads, and the poor signage."

According to official statistics, traffic accidents recorded a decrease of 13% (543 fewer) in the first half of the year compared to the same period in 2023.

However, the incidents on the roads and streets of the country do not cease, and the citizens are concerned about the frequency with which they occur and their high cost in terms of loss of human lives and material damage.
