The driver of a rental car for tourism lost control of the vehicle and ended up crashing into two poles in Ciego de Ávila, causing significant damage to the body of the car.
The accident occurred this Monday on the Central Highway of Cuba, at the entrance to the city, according to reports from social media users. Apparently, the incident caused injuries to the occupants of the vehicle, who required hospital attention, but this has not been confirmed by the authorities or the official press.
"Accident at the entrance of Ciego de Ávila. The rear tire of the 'tur' exploded and lost control," reported a user in the Facebook group 'Revolico Ciego de Ávila'.
Images shared in their post allowed for an appreciation of the damage to the body of the vehicle, apparently a Peugeot sedan with license plate T 031 649.
"I was going 120 km, I was there, first it hit a concrete pole and then the one that's in the photos. The tires were new according to those who were there, the explanation was caused by something else on the road," commented a user in the Facebook group, where several others attributed the accident to a blowout of one of the car's tires.
There were also contradictory reports about the health status of the occupants of the vehicle. In response to comments from many who claimed that the driver had died, the user identified as Cosi Flow said, "Gentlemen, there are no victims. The man is in the hospital being treated, please."
However, Modesto Fernández Ramos identified a certain "Víctor Manuel, alias Pocholo," as the victim of the accident, while Alián Díaz stated that "the driver arrived alive at the hospital but died minutes after being there."
For their part, other users drew attention to the area where the accident occurred, which is home to at least two educational institutions, and expressed alarm over the incident just as the school year is beginning. This is why they criticized drivers who do not comply with the speed limit set for these urban areas.
At the end of November 2019, the transportation company Transtur, part of the Ministry of Tourism of Cuba, announced on its Facebook profile the arrival in the country of 368 Peugeot 301 vehicles intended for tourist rentals.
The arrival of this set was in addition to another 365 cars of the same brand and model, which had previously arrived in the country to "oxygenate the company's car fleet."
However, despite the considerable investment by the state-owned company, rental cars for tourists are among those most affected by accidents on the Island, partly due to the poor state of the roads and the lethal combination of this factor with high speeds and alcohol consumption.
The announcement of these acquisitions with public money generates unease in a population that is suffering from the collapse and lack of investment in essential sectors for the country, such as health and education.
