American Airlines, the American airline that operates the most flights to Cuba, has made changes to its carry-on baggage policy in accordance with the modifications that came into effect in the European Union on September 1.

On its website, the company specified the new regulations that will be in effect for the carry-on luggage.

Travelers using American Airlines are entitled to one personal item and one piece of carry-on luggage. The personal item must have dimensions of 45 x 35 x 20 centimeters and fit under the front seat. The following items do not fall within this category:

  1. Diaper bags (one per child).
  2. Breast milk extractor.
  3. Soft material cooling bag for breast milk.
  4. Child safety seats, baby carriages, and medical or mobility assistance devices.

On its part, the carry-on luggage must have a total dimension, including handles and wheels, that does not exceed 56 x 36 x 23 centimeters. It must fit in the overhead compartment or under the seat. Otherwise, it must be checked to be dispatched in the cargo hold.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) impose restrictions on the transportation of various common products. If a passenger does not declare these items, they would be violating U.S. Federal Law, which could result in a penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.

On flights to countries in the European Union, it is prohibited to carry certain animal products, such as meats, cheeses, and cold cuts. Additionally, no part of the world is allowed to transport:

  1. Alcoholic beverages with more than 70% alcohol by volume.
  2. Alcoholic beverages with less than 70% alcohol by volume.
  3. Batteries: regular batteries are allowed (in carry-on luggage), but not a car battery, for example.
  4. Cutting instruments: knives, razors, etc. They can be carried in checked luggage, not in carry-on.
  5. Aerosols for self-defense.
  6. Drones.
  7. Dry ice.
  8. Electronic cigarettes: you can bring them in your carry-on luggage, but you will not be able to use them on board any flight.
  9. Explosives.
  10. Firearms or ammunition.
  11. Flammable liquids or solids.
  12. Tools that run on gasoline.
  13. Household items: solvents, aerosols, insecticides, etc.
  14. Electric scooters.
  15. Lighters and matches.
  16. Personal care items: you can bring one of each (perfume, nail polish, for example), but they must be transported in small containers and all within the same bag of up to one liter capacity.
  17. Pressure vessels or compressed gases.
  18. Samsung Galaxy Note 7.
  19. Meals with a flameless heating system.
  20. Life jackets.
  21. Scissors.
  22. Smart bags: you can travel with this type of luggage as carry-on if the battery is removable. If the piece of luggage needs to be checked at the ticket counter or at the boarding gate, you must remove the battery and take it with you.
  23. Stun guns.

Last year, American Airlines updated the fees it applied to checked baggage to Cuba.

The new baggage policy of the airline introduces a new fee for economy class luggage, in addition to an increase in the cost for its transoceanic and transatlantic connections.

American Airlines operates several flights from Miami Airport to Cuba, including eight daily flights to Havana. In addition, it connects with the airports of Varadero, Santa Clara, Camagüey, and Santiago de Cuba.
