The current pop star, Taylor Swift, caused a stir in the political sphere by publicly declaring her support for Kamala Harris's candidacy for the 2024 presidential elections in the United States this Tuesday.
Through a post on her Instagram account, Swift expressed her support for the current vice president, describing her as a "talented and steadfast leader." The singer emphasized that her support is based on her belief that Harris can "lead with calm instead of chaos," which she considers essential in the current political climate.
"Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven't done so yet, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the positions these candidates take on the issues that matter most to you," Swift said in her post.
"I am going to vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 presidential elections. I believe she is a strong and talented leader, and I think we can achieve much more in this country if she brings us calm and not chaos," said the singer. Swift's post not only praised Harris but also the Democratic running mate, Tim Walz, highlighting his commitment to LGBTQ+ rights, abortion access, and women's right to make decisions about their own bodies.
With over 280 million followers on Instagram, Swift's statement has the potential to influence millions of young voters, a crucial demographic for Democrats in this election.
The singer also took the opportunity to urge her followers to register and inform themselves before voting, emphasizing that the election is "theirs," while highlighting the importance of being an active part of the democratic process.
The photo accompanying the publication shows Swift with her cat, in what some have interpreted as a response to disparaging comments made by JD Vance, Donald Trump's running mate.
Swift's support for Harris is not her first foray into politics; she had already expressed her support for Joe Biden in the 2020 elections. However, the artist explained that she decided to be clear about her voting plans after Trump spread a false image of her promoting his candidacy, which led Swift to reflect on the dangers of misinformation in the age of artificial intelligence.
"I recently realized that my AI-generated image was published on Donald Trump's networks falsely supporting his presidential campaign. It truly evoked my fears around AI and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It led me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my real plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth," the diva stated.
This endorsement is considered one of the most important for Harris so far, given Swift's mobilization power among her massive base of followers.
