The Cuban user Yunia (@yunia_wanderlust) shared an emotional video on TikTok for the first anniversary of her departure from Cuba, a journey that led her to start a new life in Spain. Through a series of nostalgia-filled images, she showcased the moments leading up to her exit from the country and the mixed feelings she experienced that day.
"Today, a year ago, I was on my way to the airport, leaving Cuba," she wrote in one of the first scenes of the video, where she is seen inside a car, accompanied by another person while heading towards her final farewell. In her words, she confessed how difficult it was to control her emotions: "I was trying not to cry, but it was one of the best and worst days of my life."
The video continues to show the atmosphere at the airport, full of travelers, while Yunia recounts how nervous she was before boarding the flight that would take her to Spain. "From that moment on, it was just me facing a new life," she said, revealing the mix of emotions from that pivotal day.
Among the hardest moments she remembers is not being able to hug her father before leaving. "I cried on the plane, I think we all have, and I couldn't hug my dad at the airport," she shared, referring to the pain of separation. Although her dream of leaving Cuba came true, Yunia described that moment as devastating: "Finally, my dream was coming true, to leave Cuba, but I was shattered."
The video also included scenes of his farewell with family and friends, where he shared tearful hugs. "They say goodbyes are sad, and I tell you, every time I remember it," he reflected.
The sacrifice of leaving everything behind was a reality that Yunia did not avoid: "I suppose it’s the price one has to pay, unfortunately for Cubans," she expressed with sorrow. Despite everything, in retrospect, she is grateful for the support she received to leave Cuba: "I am so thankful to everyone who supported me; it wasn’t easy to get out."
Finally, Yunia closes her video with a reflection on the future and what still lies ahead in her new life. "I just hope that all of this is worth it," she concludes hopefully, although hinting that the sacrifice of leaving still weighs on her heart.
