Two Cuban immigrants and more than 30 people of other nationalities came out unharmed from a traffic accident that occurred on a road in southern Guatemala in the early hours of this Monday, when the bus they were traveling in overturned.

The incident occurred at kilometer 72, in the jurisdiction of Siquinalá, in the department of Escuintla, and involved 36 migrants who were on the bus: 29 Venezuelans, three Colombians, one Dominican, one Haitian, and two Cubans. Among the travelers were five minors, reported the National Civil Police (PNC) in a statement.

After the accident, police officers and rescue teams rescued the migrants and provided them with the necessary assistance, according to the PNC report.

Allegedly, the individuals did not suffer significant injuries, as none required specialized medical attention. The rescuers "indicated that they did not warrant being transferred to a hospital."

"Personnel from the Siquinalá police substation provided them with food and shelter while their transfer to a location of the Guatemalan Institute of Migration for the respective procedures was coordinated," stated the police.

Authorities continued their investigations on Monday to capture the bus driver, who fled the scene.

In February, nine Cuban immigrants died in a car accident on a road in Guatemala while traveling to that country's border with Mexico. Of the Cubans in the crashed vehicle, only one survived.

Guatemala is one of the countries that thousands of Cuban and other nationality immigrants pass through on their way to the southern border of the United States, in search of asylum in that nation.

Migrants from Cuba risk their lives on that dangerous journey, determined to reach Mexico and obtain a CBP One appointment to present themselves at a port of entry to the U.S. and apply for asylum in this country.
