The Cuban Carlos Alberto Méndez, who was being held in a Miami prison awaiting trial for armed sexual assault against his ex-wife, was charged this Wednesday with a new count for conspiring to murder his victim, with the intention of preventing her from testifying against him.
At the beginning of August, while he was detained at the Metrowest Detention Center in Miami-Dade County, 43-year-old Méndez befriended another prisoner, to whom he proposed to kill his ex-wife to avoid going to trial.
According to the arrest report, the accused asked the other inmate if he knew anyone or if he could help him murder the woman.
Méndez provided the prisoner with information about his ex-partner's daily activities, her schedules, and whereabouts. He also drew a map of her home and the place where she parked her vehicle, and advised him on how he could approach her without being seen.
The police located and seized the maps made by the accused, which are part of the evidence against him.
Initially, the Cuban proposed to the other prisoner to strangle the victim with a jacket that she always keeps in her car, but in the end, they agreed to use a gun.
According to the inmate's statement to the police, Méndez told him that he would make arrangements with a family member to provide him with the money (1,500 dollars) to buy the firearm.
The Telemundo51 channel contacted Méndez's father by phone, who claimed that he “never knew anything about that alleged plan and explained this to the police.”
Méndez faces two charges: armed sexual assault and instigation to first-degree murder, and remains in custody without the possibility of bail.
The Cuban man sexually assaulted his ex-wife in March 2023, after which he fled the state of Florida to avoid being charged. He was ultimately located and arrested in Lake Hills, Texas, by the U.S. Marshals, and extradited to Miami.
