After a "movie-style chase" through the streets of Ostia, in Rome, Italy, a young Cuban ended up being caught by the police while trying to sneak away in an area considered one of the main drug trafficking hotspots on the Roman coast.
The chase began on the waterfront of Duca degli Abruzzi, just before 11 PM on the night of September 3, and ended in the early hours of September 4, in the dangerous area of "Lotti," where a 29-year-old Cuban citizen was arrested, according to local media, which did not reveal his name.
A patrol from the Ostia police station detected a rental Citroën C4 driving at high speed along the promenade, which raised the agents' suspicions, prompting them to try to stop it for a check.
However, the driver of the car ignored the stop sign and accelerated. In his escape, he went through two red lights and, in a reckless maneuver, entered one of the streets against oncoming traffic.
The chase intensified until the Citroën crashed into some barriers on Vasco de Gama Avenue and also collided with several parked cars.
The two occupants of the vehicle immediately got out and fled on foot in different directions.
The Cuban, with a backpack over his shoulder, tried to hide in an apartment in the "Lotti" area, but the agents managed to intercept him before he could enter. Meanwhile, inside the residence, chaos erupted, and several immigrants who were there jumped from the first-floor windows to avoid being captured by the police.
The Cuban was taken to the precinct, where the officers found in his possession tools for theft and a backpack with stolen valuables, including several watches still with their tags on.
The man is accused of resisting a public official and receiving stolen goods.
Investigations revealed that the Cuban lived in an apartment rented with other Latin Americans, and that this residence could have been used as a hideout to distribute the loot from the robberies.
This month, four Cuban citizens in an irregular situation were arrested and subjected to immediate expulsion from Italy after being caught in possession of burglary tools and narcotic substances, according to authorities from the police station in the municipality of Verbania.
In June, Italian carabiners arrested the Cuban Edgar Molina, 22, who had a clandestine laboratory in the basement of his house in Rome, where he manufactured an arsenal of weapons and ammunition.
