The residents of the building known as "El Hotelito de Cojímar" raised their voices once again to denounce the precarious condition of the property and the extreme and immediate risk of a collapse that could destroy their homes and endanger their lives.
Located at 15217 Villanueva Street, between Real and Cuevas Streets, this building in Cojímar is about to bury the families living there, according to complaints from neighbors to the citizen journalism page La Tijera.
"A year ago, the neighbors took to the streets. They silenced us with promises that they were going to give us some apartments in a polytechnic school for Physical Education. But it was all a lie, it was just to shut us up and give us false hopes. They told us to keep our mouths shut, or else we would lose our jobs," said the source of the complaint.
Accompanied by abundant images showing the deterioration of the property, the complaint emphasized the despair of the families, who feel abandoned and deceived by the authorities.
"As you can see, everything is a lie. Families have nowhere to go and live in fear that the building will collapse on them, bury them, and that there will be many victims," lamented one of the neighbors of the building.
In November 2023, residents of the building took to the streets in protest of a partial collapse that occurred on their façade. Videos shared on social media showed a group of neighbors demonstrating while blocking traffic on a street in the coastal locality of Habana del Este municipality.
"Look, a disabled boy, a two-year-old girl, another two-year-old girl, a three-year-old boy, all full of kids... and they do nothing, they do nothing, it's just hitting the ball around, hitting the ball around... We've been in this situation for over 15 years. This is it, man, either they take everyone to prison, or they get us out of here for something worthwhile," said one of the affected neighbors in the recording.
The sister of one of the victims of the partial collapse shared details of what happened with Martí Noticias. She explained that a roof overhang fell in front of the door where her family was about to exit with a "little girl."
"Nobody cares about us, and the building is currently falling apart, almost killing the woman and the girl, right there, right now," declared a woman participating in the protest. "It's a little hotel from the 1950s (...) the eaves have fallen off and some pieces of the roof have come down, and there are many cracks. There is a danger of total collapse," she described.
The recent images shared by La Tijera attest to this situation, which has only worsened over time due to the inaction of the competent authorities.
