The brigadier general of the reserve of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) of Cuba, Juan Antonio Hernández Hernández, passed away this Monday, according to the Cuban Television News.
Hernández, who had an extensive military career in the country, stood out for his participation in various missions and responsibilities within the FAR, particularly in the Youth Labor Army (EJT), whose nefarious brigades remain in the memory of many Cubans who were punished or forced to endure hard agricultural labor as part of their military service.
Hernández Hernández joined revolutionary activities at a very young age, participating in the Association of Young Rebels and in the Literacy Campaign of 1961.
Later, he joined the General Military Service, from where he began a career that would lead him to hold various positions in the Armed Forces. One of his first roles was as a platoon leader in artillery, quickly standing out for his leadership ability.
In 1973, when the Youth Labor Army was created, Hernández was appointed head of the Transport and Armament Section in Camagüey, taking on logistical and strategic tasks within this military force dedicated to productive work.
In 1988, his career took a turn when he was appointed head of the Political Section of the EJT, and six years later he took on the role of chief of staff of the same institution.
Throughout his career, Hernández was awarded several distinctions, such as the Literacy medals and the Ignacio Agramonte medals in all three classes. In addition, he participated in congresses of the Communist Party of Cuba and the Young Communist League, consolidating his figure in the Cuban political-military sphere.
The passing of Hernández adds to the recent deaths of other high-ranking military officials in Cuba, such as generals Juan Israel Cervantes and Romárico Sotomayor García, who also played prominent roles within the FAR.
At the end of September 2019, exactly five years ago, the reserve Army Corps General Rigoberto García Fernández passed away in Havana, who held the position of chief of the EJT for more than 20 years.
