The mother of former Cuban baseball player Omar Linares, Francisca Izquierdo, was buried this Thursday in her hometown of San Juan y Martínez, after passing away in the early hours of the morning.

Izquierdo, 86 years old, was suffering from an acute respiratory lung disease, said Pinar del Río journalist Osbel Benítez Polo on his Facebook profile.

The mother of Omar and Juan Carlos Linares, two renowned Cuban baseball players, "had the privilege of seeing her boys shine in Cuban baseball," and was also described as a "model mother devoted to her family and grandchildren," highlighted Benítez Polo.

His son Omar is considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, who stood out on the Vegueros de Pinar del Río team, quickly earning a spot on the national team due to his extremely high quality both offensively and defensively.

Five titles in the National Series and three Selective tournaments, 15 consecutive seasons batting over .300, and in seven of those seasons batting over .400 are a clear testament to the kind of player the vueltabajero was.

Omar Linares was hired in 2016 to coach the Japanese team Chunichi Dragons, a team where he played as an athlete between 2002 and 2004.

In 2023, he/she/they extended this contract.
