The Cuban singer Ovidio Crespo, better known as Ovi, is being held by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and could face a deportation order.
According to the agency's website, Ovi is currently at the Krome Detention Center, from where migrants are usually deported to their countries.
The reggaeton artist appeared in court on Wednesday after being arrested the day before in Miami, accused of possession of controlled substances, verbal assault with a firearm, and public display of a firearm.
The judge imposed bail and a restraining order against a Venezuelan who pointed a gun at her from his car while both were driving in Miami. When he was arrested, officers found the pistol on his belt and two generic Percocet pills (a semi-synthetic narcotic pain reliever) in the car.
Journalist Alexis Boentes of Telemundo 51 revealed on his Instagram account that immigration authorities presented the singer with a immigration hold, a request made by ICE when they have an interest in a person detained in a local, federal, or state jail. When this happens, the migrant, after being released, can be held for an additional 48 hours.
"During that time, ICE can go after that person and take them to one of its centers, as seems to have happened in this case," Boentes explained.
Regarding Ovi's future, lawyer Jesús Reyes explained that even if a deportation order is issued, it is not certain that he will be returned to Cuba, especially due to the difficulties of deportation to the Island.
On his YouTube account, the lawyer emphasized that the charges faced by the detained individual are serious and that if convicted, it could lead to not only a removal process but also deportation.
"However, even with a deportation order, it is not certain that he will be physically deported due to difficulties in deporting people from Cuba to the Island. It is possible that he may be able to stay in the United States under a supervision order," he clarified.
This week, the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) in Miami released the video of the arrest of the Cuban reggaeton artist, from whom two officers had to forcibly remove from the car while a third pointed a gun at him.
"He was involved in a traffic confrontation and pointed a firearm at another driver. He is facing several felony charges," said the agency on its X account.
Ovi was located on Wednesday while driving a Lamborghini truck in Doral, where he resides. He was transferred to the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center and charged with possession of controlled substances, verbal assault with a firearm, and firearm display in public.
The incident that led to his detention occurred on Monday shortly after 12:45 pm.
The victim, Venezuelan model Giussepe Benignini, was traveling on Southwest Eighth Street under Florida's Turnpike in west Miami-Dade when Ovi's McLaren cut him off. Benignini honked his horn, and Ovi responded by pointing a gun through the window.
The model recorded everything with her cell phone. She recognized the singer and his car and identified him through Instagram.
"I was driving and I see a car, a McLaren, cutting me off. I honked the horn because it almost hit me, and when I honked, he stopped and pulled out a gun. [...] I thought he was going to shoot me," recounted the victim.
This incident adds to other similar ones that the Cuban singer has been involved in in recent years in the United States, where he has been arrested several times.
In 2021, he had a confrontation with another singer and also displayed a weapon in public.
