Alfonso Urquiola's private car is facing technical difficulties, and some people claim that the "Lada is beyond repair" after 25 years of use, but there is no support from INDER for this great figure of Cuban baseball.

The legendary former director and former baseball player is going through a complicated situation due to the deterioration of his vehicle, which is currently under repairs, as indicated by sports journalist Ernesto Amaya Esquivel on Facebook.

Amaya highlighted that, recently, INDER has granted new vehicles to multiple glories of Cuban sports, as well as to active athletes and others related to the sports field. However, Urquiola, despite his extensive merits in national sports, has been overlooked in these lists.

Urquiola was a key player for the historic Vegueros teams from Pinar del Río during the 70s, 80s, and 90s. As a player, he represented Cuba in competitions such as the World Championships, Intercontinental Cups, Pan American Games, and Central American Games.

Later, as director, he led the Pinar del Río team to victory in three national series (97-98, 2010-11, and 2013-14). He also headed the Cuba Baseball Team, achieving notable accomplishments, including:

  • Gold in the World Championship in Italy (1998).
  • Gold in the Pan American Games in Winnipeg (1999).
  • Victory in the Caribbean Series in San Juan, Puerto Rico (2015).
  • He led the Cuba team in their historic matchup against the Baltimore Orioles.

The situation of Urquiola, according to Amaya's post, is not unique. Other sports legends from Cuba, such as Félix Pino, Juan Carlos Oliva, Daniel Lazo, and the family of the late Reinaldo Costa, also face similar difficulties. Costa, unfortunately, passed away without having received the car he was expecting.

The post received messages of support and others of criticism, where they point out that Urquiola at least has that old side to move forward "when other great figures of Cuban sports have died in absolute misery."

The public complaint made by Amaya seeks to mobilize the authorities and society in general so that figures as important to sports in Cuba as Alfonso Urquiola are not "forgotten," individuals who have brought great glory to the country but who today need support.
