Day of devotion to Obbatalá and the Virgin of Mercy: "May peace reign"

On September 24, Obbatalá is celebrated in the Osha faith and Our Lady of Mercy in the Catholic tradition. This Yoruba deity is a symbol of peace, purity, and protection.

September 24 is a day of special significance for believers of the Yoruba religion in Cuba, as it is the celebration of Obbatalá, the father of humanity.

Devout Cubans of the Catholic religion celebrate the Day of Our Lady of Mercy, an invocation of the Virgin Mary.

Both figures were syncretized in the Cuban religious context and symbolize peace, purity, and the quest for truth.

Obbatalá, according to Yoruba beliefs, was sent by Oloddumare to create humans and protect them. This orisha is the symbol of balance and harmony, rejecting violence and promoting love among his children.

He is known as the owner of heads. The Yorubas say that he is the one who governs people's thoughts, dreams, and intelligence.

For its part, Our Lady of Mercedes, dressed in white like Obbatalá, is venerated by Catholics as the Virgin of Mercy.

Her devotion arrived in Cuba centuries ago and merged with the worship of the Yoruba deity. On her day, the faithful pray for peace in the world, prosperity in the land, in their families, and in their souls.
