A two-year-old Cuban girl died on the morning of this Tuesday in Santiago de Cuba, after spending several days hospitalized with a serious condition due to the ingestion of a veterinary antiparasitic medication.
The girl, a resident of the town of La Martinica in the municipality of San Luis, had taken the medication Labiomec, which was given to her by her maternal grandmother, according to independent journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada.
A study published in the Cuban Journal of Animal Health indicates that Labiomec is one of the most widely used veterinary antiparasitic medications for the control of endo and ectoparasites in different animal species such as cattle, sheep, pigs, dogs, and cats.
"We did everything we could, but there were failures in many organs," said a specialist about the death of this minor, who was admitted to the Children's Hospital North of Santiago de Cuba.
The girl could not be transferred to the hospital in Colonia, another facility within the healthcare system in Santiago de Cuba, because her condition was very serious. "We treated her here, but each day she worsened," declared the doctor whose name was not revealed by Mayeta Labrada.
The girl is being mourned at the local funeral home in San Luis.
