Amid rumors about his alleged death, Raúl Castro has been absent from activities related to the recent visit to Cuba by Vietnamese President To Lam, an unusual occurrence given his role in Cuban diplomacy and his history of welcoming high-ranking officials from that country.
To Lam, who was received by Castro two years ago during a visit to the island when he was not yet president, arrived at José Martí International Airport and was greeted by Dr. Roberto Morales Ojeda, a member of the political bureau.
Later, the Vietnamese met with his Cuban counterpart Miguel Díaz-Canel and his wife Lis Cuesta.
However, it is noteworthy that no meeting with Castro has been announced, who has been at the center of rumors about alleged serious health issues or possible death since last week.
Although there has been no official confirmation and it was rather said to be false news, the topic went viral on social media.
Raúl usually receives important politicians such as the president of Belarus this year, and UN officials who have visited Cuba.
The last time To Lam visited the island, two years ago, Castro, as the historical leader of the country, personally received him.
Both leaders, Army generals, share a strong bond due to their backgrounds in their respective countries, which have historically maintained good diplomatic relations.
