Cuban in the United States shares her first purchase with food stamps: "The truth is it's a great help."

"I hadn't seen the little paletita since I was about 5 years old, I saw it and I was delighted because I never saw them in Mexico."

The Cuban Leanis Ramírez, who recently crossed to the United States after several months in Mexico, shared a video with her followers of her first purchase using 'food stamps' benefits. In the video posted on her TikTok account @leanis.ramirez, she excitedly shows what she bought and recounts her experience in an American supermarket.

"Join me on my first shopping trip with the food stamps from the United States; I’ll be showing you everything," Leanis started off by saying, before showing her followers the products she bought to prepare her meals. Among the ingredients she mentioned were tomatoes, cabbage, white onion, and peppers to season her dishes. However, she was also surprised by the high prices, saying that four peppers cost her 4 dollars. Other products she included in her purchases were malanga, fruits like mandarins and papaya, as well as potatoes and milk, although she admitted she forgot to record the latter.

One of the most emotional moments of the video was when Leanis showed the meat section of the supermarket. “Every Cuban knows that this drives us crazy because there isn’t any in Cuba,” she said with laughter while checking the prices of the products. In the end, she chose ground beef, beef steak, and chicken breasts. She also mentioned that she bought tomato puree, coffee, and paletitas, a candy she hadn't seen since she was a child.

The total of your purchase was 152 dollars, something that, although it seemed a bit expensive, you considered a "good help." Leanis highlighted that prices in that state are higher compared to other places in the country.

The reactions from her followers were immediate. Some were surprised by her comments about meat in Cuba, like a user who asked, “What do you mean there’s no meat in Cuba? Or did I misunderstand that part?” Others took the opportunity to ask for information on how she managed to cross the border and contact the people who helped her in the process: “Can you give me the contact of the person who picked you up in Laredo?” wrote one of her followers. Most of the comments were supportive, with some congratulating her on her new phase in the United States, while others were interested in the prices she mentioned.

“Like how expensive, dude, if you just arrived,” commented a follower humorously, while another said: “aaaaa, I’m happy you watch my videos,” in response to her thanks. The followers also flooded her with heart and applause emojis, celebrating her first purchase on U.S. soil.

Leanis has been documenting her migration process since she left Cuba, and this video shows an important part of her adaptation to life in the United States, where, in addition to facing high prices for some products, she also seems to enjoy the conveniences that her new environment offers her.
